Customers Goals:

Each manufacturing plant operates as its own profit center responsible for its own P & L statement. In the manufacturing industry controlling lift truck costs as it relates to a cost of doing business is something that is followed very closely. While the competiveness of the material handling industry provides market driven rental rates this manufacturer utilizes that strategy to keep cost under control by outsourcing ownership to a third party material handling dealer to control costs. However, costs associated with damage and abuse of equipment is outside of contract and must be managed by the manufacturer. The ability to understand when a vehicle is engaged in a potentially harmful impact situation and a record of when safeties are performed is critical for controlling costs.

Integrated Solutions:

Working with a local lift truck dealer IVDT’s Defender IM3 system was positioned to provide the manufacturer with the details required to capture that data and drive sustainable safe and cost effective behaviors. The vehicle access control system has 16G settings, which allow for more accurate sensitivity in reporting high impacts that potentially result in damage. In addition the systems utilizes two notifications, the high already mentioned and one lower impact setting which acts as a warning to the driver to help prevent harmful impacts before they happen acting as a preventative safety tool. In addition, the Defender IM3 allows for a pre-shift safety-reporting tool that was available for both their regular 8-hour shifts and their 12-hour continental operations. The key integration for this system is the fact that it doesn’t just collect data but also connects to a network server through the Base Station communication hub and is capable of sending email notifications on events such as high impacts. In addition, the event data collected on the Base Station is obtainable through a LAN webpage. Through usage of the system the manufacturer was able to get insight into specific tasks being performed by the lift truck that were damaging masts and make changes to the operation.

  • Increased Visibility: Supervisors responsible for the management of the fleet are able to stay connected without policing the environment. The notifications on the PDA device and LAN webpage provide ‘real time data’ information about pertinent events.
  • Accountability: Operator access codes and event time stamp recording create an environment of awareness and responsibility.
  • Ease of Use: The lift truck operator is required to only input an vehicle access code and acknowledge that a safety has been performed to a ‘Pass’ acceptance.
  • R.O.I: Giving visibly to decision makers allows them to be proactive in decisions about the fleet rather than reactive. Understanding who, what and where an event happened provides data for change. Operators accountability improves costs associated with damage.
